IERO Conference 2011:
Oil Industry Players Team Up for Safety
The country's major
oil industry players have banded together once again to
promote the importance of safety and emergency preparedness
in the fourth staging of the Philippine-Institute of Petroleum's
(PIP) - Industry Emergency Response (IERO) at the Manila Hotel.
The one-day conference
and exhibit is organized by the Philippine Institute of Petroleum
(PIP) and its member companies: Petron Corporation, Pilipinas
Shell Petroleum Corporation, Chevron Philippines Inc., Total
(Philippines) Corporation, PTT (Philippines) and LiquiGaz
(Phihilippines). Themed "Teaming Up for Safety", the event aims
to be a platform for the exchange of knowledge and best practices
among oil industry players and key stakeholders from the energy
and public safety sectors, in line with PIP's commitment to
continuously build skills in safety and emergency preparedness.
Sally Monteiro, Executive
Director of PIP, says, "In responding to any emergency situation,
it is important to work together with partners who share the common
cause of ensuring public safety. Through this event, we hope to
demonstrate the industry's readiness, as well as learn from the
experiences and expertise of our stakeholders.
Since 2007, PIP has
been hosting annual events that showcase the industry's joint
efforts to respond to emergency situations. What started out
as friendly competition among member companies has evolved to
include other concerned stakeholders such as LGU's, local
government agencies, and other safety practitioners, thus
expanding PIP-IERO's impact and reach.
2011 is the first
year that PIP will be holding its IERO event in a Conference
format to engage more leaders and industry experts in a dialogue
on the latest developments and global standards on safety and
emergency response, covering all areas of operations - from
inland waters to the road to the terminal. Department of Energy
Secretary Jose Rene Almendras leads the powerhouse roster of
resource speakers from various government agencies and institutions,
including the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council,
Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Red
Cross and Oil Spill Response Ltd.
Another highlight of the
event is the exhibit of safety equipment and devices, which features
the display of road safety compliant tank trucks of PIP member
companies, to underscore its commitment to constantly improve
its safety performance.
"Safety is everybody's
concern. We look forward to sharing our safety objectives and
involving more partners towards the pursuit of public safety,"
Monteiro adds.
The PIP is a non-stock,
non-profit, SEC-registered grouping of businesses operating in
the Philippines' downstream oil industry. Among its main objectives
is the creation of a venue and forum for the sharing, preservation,
and refinement of best practices in the field of health, safety,
environment, and security. ###
